If you’ve got your mind all twisted about the many career paths to pick from, the best thing to do would be to find out what each on your list compromises of work wise. So, if a being a certified nurse assistant or better known as a CNA is on your list, then you should indeed know what one of that professions actually does in a day at work.

In general, these nurse assistants are exactly as what the job title suggest; they assist nurses in various sectors such as in hospitals, nursing homes, care centers, schools, and universities and so on. Under the supervision of a qualified nurse, they provide the most care to the patient and help the medical staff with various paper works and so on as well. The job sounds easy, but try your hand at it and you will see that it requires a lot of patience, dedication, care and passion for people.

A typical day at work for a CNA would start from making rounds in the morning to all the patients under their care. If there are new patients, they would need to check the files or information board to see if they are responsible of caring for the patient. When all the rounds are being made, basic checkups should be carried out depending on the condition of the patients. They would need to monitor the vital signs and fill in the report sheet or report it to the nurse in charge.

Once that is done, in hospitals and care centers, it would be their job to make sure that the patient gets enough food and help them eat of assistance is required. If bathroom visits and other basic doings require assistance, that is what they would need to do as well. Besides that, while caring for the patient is important, tending to the patients comfort is also part of the CNA’s job as well.

See that the bedding is changed, pillows are sufficient and if any clean up is necessary. In addition to all of that, the CNA would need to constantly check in with all their patients from time to time making sure they are doing well and need no assistance. If all is fine, they would check if catheter bags need emptying or is bed ridden patients need to be relieved from bed sores.

Furthermore, CNA’s can also be asked by nurses or doctors to prepare whatever equipments that may be necessary for surgical procedures. Sometimes they are even asked to stay through the surgery and help with passing tools, taking down records and seeing that the patient is at comfort.

Simple medical checkups can also be done by the CNA but only with the supervision of a qualified medical practitioner or nurse. On some occasions, where paperwork may be in abundance, CNA’s can also be asked to help with filling out their patients information or gathering more information if necessary.

Of course, all this depends on the place of work but in general, this would be the typical doings of a certified nurse assistant. Different workplaces come with a slightly different routine, but the job scope is pretty much regular all around.
